The Devon Cattle Breeders’ Society’s Autumn Show & Sale at Sedgemoor Auction centre, 5th October, saw steady trade for over 60 lots of pedigree Red Ruby Devons, all sold and with averages for bulls continue the Spring trade’s trend for increasing prices.  Exmoor Huntsman M16127 bred and exhibited by Messrs Poad & Slee, Furze Moor, Exford, Somerset, took the Champion’s sash with Jeff Thomas’ (Bollowal Farm, St Just, Cornwall) yearling bull, Bollowal President M17073, standing Reserve.  The Sale ring followed the Judge, with Exmoor Huntsman and Bollowal President sharing top price of the day at 3000gns.  Exmoor Huntsman was bought by Bowldown Farms, Westonbirt, Gloucestershire, to join their Atlantic Herd, and Bollowal President M17073, bought by John and Margaret Harcombe, Glebe Farm, Upton-on-Severn to join their Harcombe Herd.    Caroline & Philip Gay’s (Hillcombe Farm, Chard, Somerset) yearling polled bull, Bagnell Regent PM17063 also joining another well-established large herd, brought for 2300gns by Jim Dufosee, Farnicombe Farm, Warminster, to join his Blackhill Herd.  The 1500gns top price for females  was again shared by Jeff Thomas’ maiden heifer, Bollowal Queenie 36th F160237 and Mike Wright’s two year old heifer, Orswell Valentine 2nd F150109, the latter selling to Derbyshire breeder, Mr Richard Toon, Lower Grounds Farm, near Ashbourne, who took half a dozen females home to his successful and expanding Okeover herd.  The Champion Female, Bollowal Queenie 36th was brought by Mr Paul Brewer of Donhead Hall, Shaftesbury, Dorset, to join his promising young herd (2nd to Bollowal in this year’s Medium Herd section of the Herd Competition).   The dispersal sale of Chris Hawkin’s  Hawkscombe Herd from Combe Farm, Dunsford, Exeter, drew plenty of interest; 6 year old Eastyard Jaylo 2nd with heifer calf at foot making top price for cows & calves at 1700gns to Roger Richards’s Morvah Herd in St Keverne, Cornwall.  Her calf will be joining Ellis Grange’s Runningwell Herd.  Five year old stock bull, Eastyard Fitzroy, looking well and impressive, selling at 2500gns to Mr P Loudon of Wilkswood Farm, Swanage.  Perhaps best price of the day when considering years of service already given, was 1180gns for 15 year old Halsbury Pansy 49th (F2) SR03184, sold as part of the Hawkscombe dispersal.   Still obviously hail, hearty and productive, Pansy and calf will be travelling over the border to Wales to carry on their good work for Nick and Julie Coles’ Coleberry herd, at Penrhiwfaen, Llandovery, Camarthenshire.  With all lots sold on the day, and a full sale ring of regular and new buyers, the Sale saw all lots sold with averages holding up well.  The bull average of £2835 was up £590 compared to the Autumn Sale 2016, continuing a trend of increasing prices seen at this year’s Spring Sale when 16 bulls were sold to an average of £3280.   Female averages held steady compared to Autumn 2016, with well presented, well grown heifers and cows finding the best trade.  Yearling stores averaged £ 840.00
