The National Show travelled up country this year to Newbury to continue its push to promote the breed to farmers and the public beyond its West Country heartland. Whilst class sizes were small, Judge, Mr Jeff Thomas from Bollowal, assisted by referee judge Mr Christopher Marler, had plenty of quality to consider. The Dorrell family got off to a winning start with two year old bull, Donhead Hall Ferdinand (bred by Mr P Brewer), winning the bull class and overall Male Champion. Cambridge breeder, Gavin Hunter, won the cow class with Tilbrook Gracious 7th EX90, but the ribbons soon returned to Stonegrove, with Stonegrove Hatton 17th, winning a competitive Junior Cow class. Another eastern counties breeder, David & Sarah Tutt from Colesden took the two year old heifer class with Colesden Flirt 34th who went on to provide worthy competition for the Female Championship, but was ultimately beaten into Reserve by Stonegrove Hatton 17th. Eric & Michelle Heard were rewarded for their long journey up from Westward Ho!, with a win in the yearling heifer class with Cheristow Lovejoy. With Female and Male Champion titles in the bank, the judge’s choice for breeder champion was always going to be Stonegrove, the judge putting the Female Champion, Hatton 17th above the young bull, Donhead Hall Ferdinand. It was very good to see the Breed Society marquee, positioned right alongside the Devon ring, full of DCBS members who had come to support the National Show together with all our sponsors.
