The Devon Cattle Breeders Spring Show & Sale took place at Sedgemoor Auction Centre on Thursday, 24th March 2016. Trade for Red Ruby Devons proved strong, bucking the market trend and reflecting growing demand for medium sized suckler cows producing grass finishing cattle with carcass grades and weights ideally suited to supermarket specifications, as well as several new buyers looking to establish their herds. On the day there were a total of 22 bulls forward, with 16 sold. Four classes of bulls produced an overall Champion in Bollowal Trevelyan, bred and exhibited by Mr AJ (Jeff) Thomas from Bollowal Farm, St Just Cornwall. The Bollowal herd are multiple winners of the Devon Cattle Breeders National Herd Competition, last winning in 2015. Bollowal Trevelyan sold for 3400gns to Robin Haddys large pedigree Minster herd from Home Farm, Minster, Boscastle, Cornwall. John Gilsons Challenge Prince was reserve Champion selling to Mr S Griffiths, Grove Farm, Walterstone, Hereford for 3400gns. These two shared top price of the day for bulls.
But the keenest trade of was reserved for the females. 45 maiden heifers were forward and sold, averaging 1488gns, well above breed average. Female Champion went to Worcestershire breeders, Stonegrove Livestocks Stonegrove Hatton 15th who sold for 1100gns to Andy Summers, Wessington Farm, Awliscombe, Honiton, Devon to join his newly formed Devon herd. Mr Summers also brought her half sister, Stonegrove Hatton 16th for 1300gns. Top price for in-calf heifers went to Mr George Vellacotts Ashway Betty 1st, selling for 2000gns to Mr S Stevenson, from Trewarveneth Farm, Newlyn in Cornwall. Top price for the maiden heifers went to the well-grown Elmford Showgirl 20th from Mrs Sally Martin of Forda Farm, Highampton, Devon who sold for 1350gns to Rowland Hill from Pendorian, The Lizard, Cornwall.
